1964 John Remington, a pissed off 18 year old, joined the Army the day he came of age. (Escalatio started the year previous, thanks, LBJ.) Before leaving, John said farewell to Linda Carson, on a Spring trip when she was down from Alaska, at the Greenbrier Resort. She was the only one he told that he was going to do it. In return, she pledged her love and confessed she would be at a boarding school stateside.

John had met Linda through their parents, who had worked together on assignments from time to time, meeting up in D.C. or places like the Greenbrier. It's always a romantic spot for him. But why was John a pissed of 18 year old? Why not just run off with the woman of his dreams? Well, first, she was a little younger, and he respected her. Second, and perhaps more importantly, John's father Henry Remington was a hunter, and John grew up into the life. That life comes with a lot of baggage.

When Henry and Myrtle Remington learned about their son's choice, they weren't surprised. Whether he wanted to get away, blow off steam, or increase his skills, it didn't matter. He was their boy, and they were proud. Worried, but proud.

John performed well stateside and was quickly ushered into Airborne, and applied for Special Forces. He was sent to Vietnam for the first time. In 1967 John was shipped out to 'Nam as a Ranger. This part the boys are more familiar with, but they didn't know that he went twice, or was in for that long.

Company E (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol), 20th Infantry (Airborne) was activated on 25 September 1967 and assigned to I Field Force and stationed at Phan Rang. The nucleus of this unit came from the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division LRRP Platoon, along with soldiers from the replacement stream. John was part of this "replacement stream" and had just earned his ranger tab after serving a rotation under the 5th special Forces. He realized his talents could best be served in a more intimate atmosphere, and managed to convince his superiors.

(Marcus: Don't know how he overcame that rivalry. Dad is just full of surprises. He might have some cool awards too, just saying. The Rangers, on the other hand, were happy to have him, and he came in at rank, and insanely good (if a little insane) instead of yet another fresh private.)

John came home in 1971. He finished his tour that year and decided to hunt down the woman of his dreams, Linda Carson. Linda was busy working on her own education and changing the system in Alaska. Radicalized by her experiences in a BIA boarding school and empowered by the changing times, Linda agreed to marriage on the condition that John, if he wanted to settle down, would move to Alaska and honor her matrilineal traditions for raising kids in a stable environment, in tune with their culture. John eagerly accepted; he wouldn't be able to think of a counter if he had wanted to.

John made the drive north permanent in 1980 and he and Linda were finally married. John dutifully moved in with the family for the first year to learn from them and become part of the family, an even bigger gulf existing given his move to Alaska and change of culture. Fortunately, John found he was able to share much of his own history openly (at least the parts he might want to) with Linda's family, who knew and had respect for his father from the Greek Islands Project at the Greenbrier - there was complete acceptance, respect, and vigilance for the supernatural, if a wholly new way to look at it. John took up hunting with Linda's cousin, who would take on the brotherly role to him and tribal "uncle" role to the boys, who would come along in 1982 and 1984. He met and added Fairbanks local Martin Price to the hunting crew, who would soon have a younger daughter of his own, Cassie. For a day job, John summoned the gumption to go into construction, reinventing himself greatly.

Trying to keep some of the traditions from his and Linda's youth, John tried to foster summertime get together's between his family and Linda's twin sister June's family, letting the kids travel and see more of the country and of their family. What the adults got up to on some of the kids movie nights when just one or two folks were babysitting... well, that's another story. John also kept updating his John Remington's Journal, mostly at Linda's prompting, in case one of the boys or one of June's daughters, would find a need or take up his old occupation.
