Lisiriel is the daughter of Durdhuin and Silafireb, born in T.A. 2835. When he was young, Durdhuin fought in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Lissiriel, his youngest child, spent her youthful years in subtle frustration, watching elder relations, cousins, and friends leave Middle-Earth for Valinor. When Lissiriel was only 15, Gandalf the Grey confirmed Sauron's presence in Dol Guldur. Lissiriel's mother began to despair. Caving to Silafreb's resignation, the family moved to Lindon. Silafireb worsened, so Lissiriel's sister accompanied her on a ship departing Mithlond for the West. However, Durdhuin and his youngest child were not of the same mind, feeling a reluctance to leave that surely stemmed from some shared Sindarin blood, holding out against Noldorin doom.

No longer wanting to see the shores that his love sailed away from, Durdhuin made a retreat to Imladris. Lissiriel was fine with that. Though she understood why her mother wanted or needed to leave, and knew that it was the right thing for her sister to accompany her, Lissiriel felt like an abandoned child. She read absently through the libraries there and began to realize that, eventually, most Elves would leave as her mother and sister had. Feeling the growing threats of Shadow and knowing that Sauron was lurking somewhere made leaving seem completely inexcusable to Lissiriel. Why abandon Middle-Earth when she needs help most? Why run from the evils instead of fighting them so that they could never harm an innocent again? And to those who said the Age of the Elves was waning into a new Age of Men, Lissiriel had no tolerance; there would be no Age of Men if all Men were dead.

Dhudhuin saw his daughter slowly mature into a resolved but hopeful young Elf committed to protecting the land she called home, much as he had nearly three thousand years earlier. He gave his daughter his sword, Menelmacar, and wished her well in her travels. With his blessing, Lissiriel rode out of the safety of Imladris and headed North.
