Vault notes

Pascifist: violence, war, etc. are never justified

  • Vast. Range of possible ethics, broad
  • Philosophical, relies on a range of contexts
  • Conditional, flexible, duty, or absolute
  • Each must define violence, use of force, innocents
  • Resolve disputes with arbitration, surrender, migration
  • Moral bravery - martyr

Nonpacifists would conclude that pacifist or nonviolent methods can be effective only against a power that has no very strong motives for going to extremes of suppression or one that is governed at least in part by the same moral scruples that actuate the pacifists themselves

  • Conscientious objectors
  • Civic action vs repression/oppression
  • Culture can take decades or generations to produce
  • Often what secures peace is rule of law and expanded commercial ties, acceptance, and freedom and self-determination. In other words, defensible peace may transition to allow in a neighbor or unite one area from tribes to city or national identity
  • Ideal/goal vs attainable, aspiration
  • Requires greater organization for justice and redress

Psychopath: 1. lack of empathy, ability to be emotionally detached, but also means can control the emotions better 2. Poor sense of self-preservation 3. Anti-authority 4. Unconscientiousness 5. Lack of fear, reduced anxiety 6. Thrill seeking 7. Better at lying, not necessarily more though 8. Machiavelian, rise to leadership fast, but recklessness and impulsivity may doom them 9. Evidence for driving neurobiology 10. Acting for egocentric reasons, not moral by nature 11. compensatory model of "successful" psychopathy: people higher in certain psychopathic traits (such as grandiosity and manipulation) are able to compensate for and overcome, to some extent, their antisocial impulses via increases in trait conscientiousness, specifically impulse control 12. Risk factor in violent behavior, but not all - bad characterization

The overseer, as the position in power is key:

Overseer is violent: Amon Göth Overseer is ineffective/absentee: Abu Ghraib Overseer is charismatic and hands on: One CEO to rule them all, heroic even Overseer is manipulative: plays guards off of each other Overseer is Machiavelian: may be either a song leader seen as tough but fair, but success of the vault is gained through any means necessary Overseer has poor impulse control: may deviate in focus from the success of the vault or make an impulsive mistake

Constraints:

  • Word got out about the vault’s true nature
   * Theory: an early escape, so conditions are in place when vault opens, rather than decades later
  • First rule of vault 42 is no-one talks about vault 42
  • Vault’s condition is unknown

Different Scenarios:

Psychopaths eliminate each other for dominance Psychopaths rebel against overseer, overseer either goes down or makes an ultimate sacrifice Overseer effective/ineffective? One CEO to rule them all

Pacifists hunger strike and die Pacifists resist by non-work Pacifists revolt in next generation(s) as they no longer have the same dedication and would see justice in the act of revolt

Next generation entirely bands together in truce: see children of Nazi perpatrators
