Jennifer’s mother, Alice, arrived in the City of Angels a clueless Hollywood hopeful, but quickly fell into hard times accentuated by her developed addition to illegal drugs. Like many in her situation, she turned to prostitution when her regular, low wage jobs failed to produce enough to keep her in home and drugs. A few years later, Jennifer was born as a result of one such union.
Alice proved to be as good of a mother as could be expected in those circumstances, succeeding in keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table (usually). Most importantly, Alice succeeded in keeping Jen away from the men she brought home to make ends meet. As a result, Jen spent a lot of time, and more than a couple nights, out on the street.
During one such night, the Jen took shelter in the entry way of a martial arts studio. The sensei, who returned to work the books late that night, took pity on her and let the young girl sleep on the mats. The next day he returned to find Jennifer cleaning the dojo as a thanks. David, the sensei, took Jen under her wing and provided her a safe place during her after school hours, trading cleaning and bookkeeping for academy dues.
Thanks to his encouragement, Jen successfully finished high school; her GPA often saved by her Spanish classes. Having no money and few options, Jen joined the Army in 2004 as the Iraq war was beginning to drag on. Her talent for language was quickly discovered, and after basic training she was pushed into a crash course in Arabic. Her first deployment was in the infantry, searching and questioning Muslim women across the warzone. A year in she learned her mother, who she had been sending money back to, had died of a drug overdose.
BlackEagle Qualifications, 2012
As her tour of duty continued, she used online classes to turn the army’s crash course into an Associate’s in linguistics. On the advice of her CO, she applied to flight school near the end of her first tour. To her surprise she was accepted, and started the nine month accelerated flight program. She was rotated back to Iraq after graduation, and began flying transport and combat missions. It was on base between these missions she started becoming familiar with BlackEagle operatives.
At the end of her second tour she found her savings dryer then she had hoped. Combined with the close of the Iraq war she started considering life after the military. Conversations with some of the BlackEagle operatives indicated she had a chance at a much nicer paycheck, which brought back to her youthful dreams of opening an Akido studio of her own. She departed the Army As a flight officer after eight and a half years, and joined BlackEagle shortly after.
