Ryd is a mature Cornishman who is in his mid-50s but looks like he's in his 30s. If not for the fact that he served for 40 years at Nova Semitae, most people there would guess him to be much younger than he actually is. His family was actually from the Scilly Isles, having fled the in-fighting of the covenant located there. His family was covenant-raised, so when Nova Semitae was being established, they brought their son with them and helped establish this new English covenant on the border of Wales. Since that time, Ryd has had it in his heart to go back and see what happened at his birthplace. He gave up on his dream years ago, particularly once he retired from active service. It was a stroke of fate that these new magi announced their intention to set up a covenant there and invited interested grogs to join them.

He is a lanky, but muscled, man looking in the prime of his life except that he is missing his left eye thanks to a fight long ago. He is extremely competent as both a shield grog and grog sergeant, though these days he prefers to take it easy. He is eager to help the magi set up their new home, as it gives him an opportunity to explore the land of his birth.

Ryd is currently serving as a the prime translator for the magi, given his fluency with Cornish, the language of the Isles.
