Alberea and Eloise are twin sisters from Paris who accompanied Matteus de Taranto to the covenant on the Scilly Isles. While both of them are accomplished in their respective professions, they are perhaps best known for their their shocking practice of 'sharing' a consort between them and even bearing his children. They are lithe, with shorter-than-average blonde hair which they brush in different directions to differentiate themselves from the other. While genetically identical, Eloise is considered the more 'attractive' of the two, at least by men, for her more approachable personality while Alberea prefers to stick to business.

The twins were born in Paris and grew up in that bustling city of commerce, clergy, and students. They inherited their professions from their parents. Their father was an apothecary and their mother a midwife. Both parents brought their professions home and allowed their girls to absorb their knowledge, which they combined in their own ways. These days, Alberea focuses on the apothecary trade while Eloise acts as the herbwife. Both have training in midwifery, though Eloise practices it far more frequently. They served as a source of medications and unusual substances demanded by practicing philosophers and alchemists from the University of Paris. In exchange, they learned their letters and latin from students who visited their shop (formerly their parents', who died while they were in their teens). Their latin education helped them communicate with the students, many of whom came from abroad and did not speak the local French.

Several years ago, a foreign student named Matteus of Taranto visited their shop seeking a few compounds for some tests he was doing and caught Alberea's eye. It wasn't long before he met Eloise, who also found the Italian a compelling presence. In just about every other case where this happens, either the sisters break their familial ties, or the man goes away without either. However, due to the deep sisterly bonds and their mutual attraction to Matteus (and he to both of them), they decided that the only solution was one no good Christian would make: they would all live together and share the man between them.

For three years, this situation lasted but their reputations, individually and collectively, suffered from their unorthodox arrangement. Late in 1219, Matteus surprised and shocked them when he revealed that he had ties to a secret society of wizards and that he also practiced a form of magic taught by certain academics at the University. He followed it up with an offer from one of these 'wizards' to found a community in a remote part of England where they could practice their crafts with the appreciation of the wizards. And while a great deal of discussion (and arguing) took place, they all eventually decided to accept the wizard's offer and packed up for England to begin their new life.
