Background

A group of loyal Apophis Jaffa trained to infiltrate SGC, discovered by stargate command and shown that their god can die. (Season 3 Ep 9)

Less than a month later, their god rose from the underworld to a dominant power in the Goa'uld. (S3ep13) Then Stargate command said they killed him again. (S5ep1) And their god went quiet.

Pak'nal maintains a philosophical duality. If Apophis is truly dead, the Goa'uld are false gods, and should be overthrown. If Apophis is truly a god, he will return in time, and would reward a well placed servant in the Tau'ri ranks. Either way, Pak'nal's place is with the peoples of Phoenix command, slaying the rivals of a god that may not exist.
