Description
Who really is Gion
Gion, whose real name is Korwyn Blackthorn, is the second son (third child) of Duke Calchais Blackthorn, ruler of Cape Velen. He grew up in the ancestral home of the Dukes of Cape Velen, Castle Tordraken, which is near the city of Velen. He is 5'11 with dark hair, steel gray eyes and light olive skin. His features betray his Calishite heritage. HIs paternal great great grandmother was a powerful Calishite sorceress and a member of the Company of Eight during the Tethyr Interregnum. It is from her that Korwyn gets his sorcerer abilities.
Korwyn's full title is "Sir Korwyn, Lord of Tharamon, Knight of the Honor Guard". You will never ever hear Gion/Korwyn mention this title. He feels he has not really earned it and that it was simply given to him because of who he is.
Why Gion/Korwyn adventures
From a very young age, one could see that Korwyn was not like his brother and sisters who conformed to the expectations of their parents. Even though he tried to please his parents, there was an independent streak in him that chaffed under the ridged rules of nobility. He often did things that in veritably got him in trouble. A great example of this revolved around his dragon heritage. Unlike the rest of his family and generations before them, Korwyn embraced this part of himself. He would not hesitate to tell commoner and noble alike that he was descended from dragons. This caused no end of embarrassment for his family. As he grew older he would spend long periods of time wandering around in the woods Cape Velen consorting with elves and the fey. This coupled with his love of magic over swordsmanship soon made him the black sheep in the family. If his fate had not already been sealed, he would have been destined to be married off to some minor noble’s daughter, forced to join a religious order or given some lone tower in some unpopulated area of Cape Velen to hide him away. The tragic events changed the course of his destiny happened one early Winter’s day (Hammer 30) when Korwyn was still very young. The first they heard of event was when news reached Tordraken castle several days after Hammer 30 that all of Queen Anais of Tethyr’s nieces and nephews had been murdered save one, Ysabel Linden, the daughter of the Queen’s sister, Evonne. This terrible event would forever be known as the Children’s Massacre. Korwyn didn’t know it at the time but this event would change his life forever, some would say for the better but not Korwyn. Where there is tragedy there is also opportunity and this presented a golden opportunity that Korwyn’s parents couldn’t pass up. Since the Queen was unmarried and unlikely to have children this made Ysabel the heir to the throne of Tethyr. A proposal was put forward to marry Korwyn to Ysabel. With him being the 3rd child it was extremely unlikely that he would ever rule and therefor the risk to Cape Velen being reabsorbed into Tethyr was extremely remote. The Duchy had a lot to gain from marrying Korwyn to Ysabel which outweighed any risk to losing their independence. Cape Velen desperately needs Tethyr help against the ogre kingdom of Muranndin which has cut off most land routes into the country and made the others dangerous. The hope was that a marriage between the noble families would cement Tethyr’s help with Muranndin. The rewards from this arranged marriage are not one sided either. Tethyr also has a lot to gain from this arrangement. When Cape Velen gained its independence over 60 years ago Tethyr lost the balk of their navy and the best ports and shipyards. They have never recovered from that. Their lack of a true navy has emboldened pirates which makes shipping into and out of Tethyr a dangerous business. Queen Anais hopes to gain from this marriage an alliance with which to deal with the pirates. Plus, as the Duke views it as extremely unlikely that Korwyn would ever rule Cape Vale, the Queen knows that nobles die every day, by accident. Her future nephew in law could one day be Duke and that would bring Cape Velen back into the Kingdom of Tethyr. With the proposal made, negotiations began in earnest that summer. To make Korwyn a more attractive prospect, despite his young age, his father had him knighted and given a fief neither of which Korwyn wants or feels he has earned. He was also forced to start training in the martial skills. This was something that he hated at the time but has since come to appreciate and hone.
As for Korwyn and Ysabel it took a year for all the negotiations to be finalized and the betrothal ceremony to happen. After the ceremony they rarely saw each other except on state visits. Despite having known Ysabel for most of his life he still never felt like he “knew” her. So as the year that they were to be married began he became increasingly anxious. He knew that once he was married that all his dreams of adventure would go unfulfilled. So he began to hatch a plan. He would convince his father to let him travel to Waterdeep. There he would slip his escort and look for adventure. After that he would come back, beg forgiveness and accept his fate. After positioning it as the last time he will be able to travel freely his farther relented and allowed him to travel to Waterdeep, with escort (guards). That was his father’s mistake and Korwyn's win. He was able to slip his escort outside of Waterdeep. Not long after he would meet his current traveling companions.
His father, learning that Korwyn had ditched his guards, went into a rage. He ordered his agents to find his son and bring him back, in chains if they must but they were to get him back in time for his wedding. The agents almost caught up with him just after he had joined his current companions. Korwyn was forced to leave the group for a while and didn’t return until after the companions had wrested the castle in the swamp away from the dragon cult. Since then he still sends messages to his parents, on occasion, letting them know he is alive and that he does plan on returning soon to fulfill his obligations to the family. In the mean time the wedding is on hold until Korwyn can be found. Despite that Korwyn did just recently send a gold dragon scale to Ysabel. They had once, long ago, had a very long conversation about dragons. He remembered that Ysabel was particularly fond of gold dragons that she had seen in a book. So the scale from a gold dragon was not only a gift to her but also a symbol that he still intended to go through with the wedding. With the scale was a note explaining how he and his companions are trying to save the world and that he would return soon fulfill his oath to marry her. Korwyn believes that after they stop Tiamat it will be time to go home, that is if he survives.
Why Korwyn will go through with the arranged marriage
The reason why can be found in the personality section below. Korwyn is fiercely loyal to his family and country. By marrying Ysabel it gives him the means to help his family and nation. It his not a situation he would wish on anyone but he will go through with it none the same. He is under no illusion that he or Ysabel love each other. HIs only hope is that over time they can learn to love each other.
Korwyn's personality
Korwyn believes in doing the right thing within the confines of the law. He is also fiercely loyal to his friends, his companions and his family. His time adventuring has taught him those of privilege should protect those that cannot protect themselves. He has seen a lot of destruction with the commoner taking the brunt of it. He has always been kind to commoners but now he sees that the only thing that separates them from the aristocracy is circumstance and means. This has been eye opening to him.
Dragon Heritage
Korwyn's dragon heritage comes from his mother. She was the daughter of the Count of Greenshores. As the story was told to her, sometime in her family's recent past, when the County of Greenshores was still part of Tethyr, a young Count feel in love with a beautiful woman that found him badly injured in the woods. He had been hunting alone when he was attacked by an owl bear. He had managed to kill the beast but hIs horse was dead and he was badly wounded. He had crawled as far has he could but the loss of blood and the other injuries overcame him. He laid on the forest floor knowing that death was not too far off. As delirium set in, he thought he imagined a woman singing to him. When he awoke he was in a clearing close to a camp fire. He searched his body for the gapping wounds that he had received form the owl bear but there were none. It was then that he noticed woman sitting on the other side of the fire. The woman had brought him back from the edge of death and had healed him. As a reward for saving him he offered her gold and jewels but instead she just asked if she could have a place to stay for the coming winter. Delighted to have her company for longer, he invited her to spend the winter in Kirgard Castle which she graciously accepted. Over time they began to fall in love and were eventually married. She bore him only one child, a girl. On the girl's 3rd birthday his wife told him the truth about who/what she was, that she was truly a gold dragon that had wanted to live amongst the people of Tethyr for a time and she never planned to fall in love with a human. Tearfully she explained that she couldn't stay any longer, kissing the child and then him, she transformed back into her dragon shape and flew off. Each year on the girls birthday a dragon could be seen flying high overhead above Kirgard Castle or so the story went. Over time the dragon's name has been lost to the descendants of the girl but if someone really truly researched it in the libraries of Kirgard they would find the the dragon's name was Garlokantha.
