Diego del Castillo is an old and wisened soldier and campaigner who's body may no longer be at its peak, but still as much to offer from his long experience on the road. Prone to telling stories and breaking out the odd shanty or marching song, Diego is known for lifting the spirits of his fellow travelers as well as providing the occasionally useful tidbit of information about passing lands, monsters and even about Airth its self.

He would spend the next thirty years as a soldier in the service of the crown. At times he loved his job, at others he hated it, but soon it was the only life he knew. During the beginning his unit would often find themselves deployed to newly located islands, pushing inland and defeating monsters in search of civilization or treasure. Once the war with the rising power of Britannia warmed up, however, he found himself increasingly moving to battle lines or serving as a Marine on the crown’s airships. That lasted until the crushing defeat of the Hispania Armada, after that, it was almost nothing but guard duty on the few far-flung ports they still controlled.

It was his unit's station on Puerto Rico saved him when the great island of Hispania sunk into the mists below. It took time for news of the disaster to travel to the remote island, and thus the first he heard of his homeland's loss was when the first ship of survivors arrived at their port. During the inevitable struggle for power in the aftermath, Diego first sided with the established Governor before switching to one of the more moderate "gone-native" Dons when it became clear was not acting out of any respect for the old country, but rather to continue to pillage the island for his own wealth. Still aching from the loss of his home and not knowing if any of his family survived, Diego finally left the service as soon as the fighting died down enough his conscience would let him go. Although his journey started in the guise of finding any remaining members of his family, it ultimately continued simply because he had no reason to every stay where he was.
