Stonehenge Tribunal | Extraordinary Grand Tribunal of 1226 »

In case you feel like reading about a standard Tribunal before the next game, there's an article on Tribunal Procedures.

Logistics

  • Since the entire covenant will be traveling to the Tribunal, Neanne has introduced a motion to have the mandatory Summer covenant meeting ahead of time (June 15 instead of June 20) and to let the covenfolk have their customary feast on the normal solstice day (June 21)
  • The distance from Nova Semitae to Blackthorn in the south of Wales is roughly 100 miles, according to the Redcaps
  • Travel is expected to take up to 5 days (20 miles/day) to travel to Blackthorn (June 16-20)
  • Pre-Tribunal Activities start whenever enough people show up and run until the evening of June 22nd
  • Tribunal begins at sunset on June 22nd and is expected to last for 2 nights
  • Post Tribunal Days and travel back home is June 24-29
  • For Obscurus Ignis: This period will run through these signs: Gemini (Air, June 16-20) and Cancer (Water, June 21-29).

Charges against Nova Semitae

  • Phessalia of Merinita charges that Nova Semitae has failed in its obligations to the Tribunal and that its vis sources, chattels, and wealth are claimable by Tribunal members (all covenant members responsible; Neanne will bear primary responsibility as the covenant Princeps)
  • Phessalia of Merinita charges that the new magi of Nova Semitae are not verified magi who have sworn the Oath (Adria, Aidan, Geoffrey, Joshua, Magni, Obscurus Ignis, Veloxia, and Thomas)
  • Phessalia of Merinita charges that magi of Nova Semitae have violated the Code by not abiding by the results of Certamen (Merlin's Well incident)
  • Phessalia of Merinita charges that magi of Nova Semitae have violated the Code by depriving her of her magical power (Merlin's Well incident)
  • Phessalia of Merinita charges that magi of Nova Semitae have violated the Code by exhibiting blatant magic in Wales (Viking Ghosts adventure) (Magni, Obscurus Ignis)

Phessalia is from Voluntas, a tribunal towards the northern end of England. Magni would be familiar with them as they suffer raids from Scottish lowland covenants as well.

Dealing with Outlaw Scottish Covenants

Speaking of Scottish lowland covenants, you all heard the Redcap tell Magni that his pater, Aduro, is seeking support for a motion at Tribunal to deal with lawless Scottish lowland covenants who raid English covenants without regard to Hermetic law. Magni can tell you they use mercenaries and blatant magic, leaving English covenants holding the bag when nobles get upset.

Aduro has a reputation of being a Hoplite (powerful magi who back Quaesitores in enforcing judgements against magi) and as someone who is an archmagus candidate. He does not seem interested in going through the process of becoming one, believing his duty is to the Order itself. Aduro's first apprentice (and thus soror to Magni), Perditia, has been arguing with Aduro to become a formal archmagus as it will enhance his reputation and become a more fearsome defender of the Order. Perditia herself is at a point in her career where she could potentially make a challenge for the title of archmagus, but it is traditionally to challenge one's parens first if they are an archmagus.

For those interested, an article on archmagi.

Sticking it to Blackthorn

Also from Voluntas, is an issue from Julia of Jerbiton. She is pushing to having the Tribunal moved to another location other than Blackthorn. Julia was the foremost maga leading the organized covenants to oppose Blackthorn and break their former stranglehold of power on the Tribunal. She helped make the Tribunal meetings quorate. However, she is developing the reputation for being something of an extremist because many magi consider Blackthorn 'broken', as they no longer command a majority of votes in the Tribunal. Despite that, she insists that Blackthorn needs to be further reigned in to prevent their abuses of the past. (Eos knows one reason why Blackthorn is so disliked.)

Other Activities at Tribunal

  • Draag of Blackthorn organises the Bjornaer gathering which resembles a pagan midsummer festival. Very secretive.
  • Edward of Milton, of Schola Pythagoranis, organises a Jerbiton gathering, which is a large formal dinner party, followed by a masquerade ball. Largely attended by Jerbiton, with the occasional 'civilized' guest invited to attend. Nearly every attendee has the Gentle Gift and impeccable manners.
  • Scintilla of Burnham formerly organised the Flambeau Melee, however, since disaster struck the Flambeaux of Stonehenge, the Melee had been cancelled indefinitely. Rumours abound that she is looking to re-establish the custom at the Tribunal of 1222.
  • Aurelia of Nigrasaxa organises the Verditius Regional Contest, a smaller version of The Contest which takes place at Verdi every twenty-two years. She will be polling magi, primarily Verditius, on their level of interest in holding a regional content.
  • Aulus of Bonisagus and Neanne of Verditius, both from Nova Semitae, organize a small colloquium for the scholastically-minded members to give lectures, share knowledge, and otherwise discuss magical theory and methods with other members. Due to a historical debacle in the Tribunal, the number of Bonisagus magi in the Tribunal is very low, so this event is not very well attended.
  • A general seller's market for enchantments, potions, books, longevity rituals, vis, and anything else magi will trade pops up. Very informal.

Tribunal Results

Session 1: External Tribunal Issues

Interference with Mundanes
Phessalia of Merinita v. Obscurus Ignis of Flambeau, Magni of Flambeau
Phessalia of Merinita charges that magi of Nova Semitae have violated the Code by exhibiting blatant magic in Wales (Viking Ghosts adventure) (Magni, Obscurus Ignis)
CASE REMANDED TO QUAESITORES FOR VERIFIATION
Interference with Faeries
Trutina of Guernicus v. Eirlyn of Merinita
Quaesitor Trutina of Guernicus brings a case against Eirlyn of Merinita for bringing the wrath of the fae unto members of the Order. Eirlyn confesses to her actions and for bringing the wrath of the fae unto her sodales, particularly the Redcaps who traverse the area in the course of their duties. She expressed regret at her actions and begged for the mercy of Tribunal.
VOTE: IN FAVOR OF TRUTINA OF GUERNICUS, 46-20 (10 absentions)
PUNISHMENT: Eirlyn is ordered to create two items to assist the Redcaps in avoiding or dealing with the angry fae to be paid to Mercer House by the next Tribunal.
Tribunal Pact
Punishing the Covenant of Horsingas of the Loch Leglean Tribunal and its allies
Due to decades of raiding by lowland Scottish covenants committing unlawful acts under Hermetic Law and the inability of that Tribunal to reign in its lawlessness, Aduro of Flambeau proposes a Tribunal-wide response. If this pact is passed, all covenants must provide at least one of the following: one magus to fight Wizard's War, 1 rook of vis, or 10 grogs to fight mercenaries and opposing grogs. Participating magi will simultaneously declare Wizard's War on each and every magus of the covenant of Horsingas and their Hermetic allies at a time to be determined by Aduro of Flambeau. Spoils of the Wizard War are to be collected up and divided by level of support donated to the cause by covenant.
VOTE: IN FAVOR OF THE PACT 50-26

Session 2: Internal Tribunal Issues

Obligations to Tribunal
Phessalia of Merinita v. Covenant of Nova Semitae
Phessalia of Merinita charges that Nova Semitae has failed in its obligations to the Tribunal and that its vis sources, chattels, and wealth are claimable by Tribunal members (all covenant members responsible; Neanne will bear primary responsibility as the covenant Princeps)
VOTE: DISMISSED 7-44 (25 absentions)
Apprentice Law, Obligation of Masters

VOTE: DISMISSED 3-44 (29 absentions)
Certamen
Phessalia of Merinita v. Aidan of Merinita, Geoffrey of Jerbiton, Magni of Flambeau, Obscurus Ignis of Flambeau, Veloxia of Bjornaer

Deprivation of Power
Phessalia of Merinita v. Aidan of Merinita, Geoffrey of Jerbiton, Magni of Flambeau, Obscurus Ignis of Flambeau, Veloxia of Bjornaer

VOTE: DISMISSED 3-44 (29 absentions)
Apprentice Law
Stephen Eruditus of Jerbiton v. Phessalia of Merinita.
A Merinita maga of Libellus was killed by faeries in the course of her studies, leaving her apprentice without a master. Her amicus, Stephen Eruditus, claimed the apprentice to continue her training. Phessalia of Merinita claims that the apprentice would be better suited under a master of the same House, particular given the Mystery Cult that she belongs to. Neither wishes to settle the matter with Certamen as is customary, and so brought the matter to Tribunal
VOTE: IN FAVOR OF STEPHEN ERUDITUS 14-13 (49 abstentions)
Apprentice Law, Deprivation of Power
Morgana of Merinita v. Perses of Tytalus
Morgana of Merinita accuses Perses of Tytalus of robbing her of her magical power due to the kidnapping of her Gifted daughter who she intended to train and claim as her apprentice. Counter-claim: the Peripheral Code clearly states that apprenticeship begins when an apprentice’s Arts are opened, and this has not happened.
VOTE: DISMISSED 6-7 (63 abstentions) (see Apprentice Law: Magus Blood Rights, below)
Deprivation of Power
Covenant of Nova Semitae v. Phessalia of Merinita
Nova Semitae charges Phessalia of Merinita with deprivation of power due to her incessant and unlawful attempts to claim the covenant's registered and recognized vis sources, in particular Merlin's Well.
VOTE: IN FAVOR OF COVENANT OF NOVA SEMITAE, 39-7 (30 abstensions)
PUNISHMENT: Phessalia is fined 2 years' worth of vis equivalent to the registered vis draw of Merlin's Well, to be paid by the next Tribunal.
Respect for Tribunal
Covenant of Nova Semitae v. Phessalia of Merinita
Nova Semitae charges Phessalia of Merinita of mocking the Tribunal and wasting its time through frivolous cases and refusing to respect time-honored traditions for resolving disputes between magi prior to Tribunal.
VOTE: IN FAVOR OF COVENANT OF NOVA SEMITAE, 65-7 (4 abstensions)
PUNISHMENT: Phessalia is fined 1 rook of vis to be paid by the next Tribunal.
Respect for Tribunal, Wizard's March
Cathaoire Ex Miscellanea, Quaesitor v. Sonnus of Flambeau
Cathaoire, Quaesitor Ex Miscellanea, reported that Sonnus of Flambeau had been convicted in the Tribunal of 1215 for interfering with Mundanes and had been ordered to provide the Redcaps with several devices to better avoid mundane notice in the areas where he caused problems. The Redcaps of Stonehenge report that he has not provided the items as ordered, and has not presented himself to Tribunal to answer for his actions. Recommendation: Expulsion from the Order and Wizard’s March.
VOTE: IN FAVOR OF CATHAOIRE EX MISCELLANEA, QUAESITOR 62-0 (14 absentions)
PUNISHMENT: Sonnus of Flambeau is Expelled from the Order of Hermes and hereby Wizard's Marched. May God have mercy on his soul.
Apprentice Law
Magus Blood Rights
Neanne of Verditius proposes a modification of Apprentice Law. A magus who is a blood relative of a Gifted child has precedence to claim the child for apprenticeship and a non-blood relative magus may not claim the Gifted child unless the blood relative recinds his claim first. This ruling does not apply to the Right of Bonisagus magi to claim any apprentice they wish for their studies per the Oath.
VOTE: IN FAVOR OF THE PROPOSAL 39-30 (8 abstentions)
Tribunal Procedures
Julia of Jerbiton v. Talion of Flambeau, Praeco
Julia of Jerbiton requests that Tribunal sessions be relocated to another location rather than be held at the Covenant of Blackthorn.
ISSUE REMANDED TO FUTURE TRIBUNAL
Tribunal Procedures
Immanola, Primus House Ex Miscellanea v. Talion of Flambeau, Praeco
Immanola, Primus House Ex Miscellanea declares that she is the eldest magus of the Tribunal and by tradition ought to be Praeco. She charges that Talion of Flambeau has usurped her position as Praeco and demands a vote to have him removed and her reinstated as Praeco of the Stonehenge Tribunal.
