Stardate 2260.60 Signal

Captain's Log: We’ve received a message from Narendra Station that a long-range shuttle called the Susquehanna has gone missing in the Carina Nebula, deep within the Shackleton Expanse. The Susquehanna was investigating an unusual alien signal that originated from the nebula when all contact was lost. We have been ordered to the planet Seku VI, the last known location of the Susquehanna and origin of the mysterious signal. Orbital scans have located both the mysteries signal and faint readings of Starfleet communicators. While no other ships are detectable above the planet, Starfleet has also advised that Klingon and Orion ships have been sighted in the region, so we should exercise caution since they may well have detected the alien signal as well.

The Away Team beamed down to the surface of Seku VI, an arid and volcanic scarred planet, and found themselves on a high, fairly open area. However, before they could do much more than get their bearings, they were ambushed by a trio of Klingons. The battle was short, brutal, and left all three of the Klingons efficiently killed by T'pring. With the action died down, the team scanned the horizon and were able to pick up three points of interest: the Starfleet Signal, the Alien Signal, and a faint wisp of black smoke rising in the distance. Making their way to the Starfleet signal first, they were able to eventually discover the partly-reconstituted remains of two people. It appeared that the energy-scattering material exposed on the planet had caused the transporter to go far wrong. They collected identity marks and quickly buried the remains before continuing. They next investigated the smoke on the horizon where they discovered the damaged remains of a Klingon scout ship. A search of the area revealed that while several had died in the crash, the survivors had broken into two parties - one that had headed for the federation landing zone and a second that had headed for the alien signal.

They subsequently followed the alien signal for a few more miles before they were suddenly stopped by a well-positioned man with a rifle. They were able to talk him down and convince him to escort the Starfleet officers back to a hidden mining base camp where they met the camp leader Ero Drallen. Ero confirms that his mining team discovered a chamber during their mining activities, and the signal started up shortly after. The Away Team convinced Ero that they were his best hope of shutting down the signal and he agrees to have them escorted to the chamber. There they discover a strange obelisk and a series of control panels. After some careful experimentation, and a coordinated effort, the Away Team is able to shut down the mysterious machine just moments before the second group of Klingons attack to "take control of the alien device." The Klingons were defeated and the Away Team made their way back to a safe location to be beamed back up. The final mission report recommended that a science team be dispatched to study the artifact.
