Exploring the Roman Town

In the Spring 1228 Season, Geoffrey investigated Julissa's gate and managed to discover that it had a scrying function for locations that you have an arcane connection to. This allowed Geoffrey to scry the flagstone of the abandoned Roman town that they briefly explored while searching for Maribus. Something reminded Geoffrey about France and so they invited their two southern France doctors to visit and asked them to look at the image; Burgundy was identified as the likely location.

Obscurus Ignis and Magni went to talk to the King of the Lake for passage back to the town, as it was the only way they knew how to get there. At first he asked for blood of Magni's firstborn (who didn't know there was a firstborn on the way), and then settled for 'a sliver of their magic' while they were in the city. This they agreed to.

Geoffrey, Magni, Obscurus Ignis, Joshua, Gwendolyn, Ed, Sir Hywel, Martin, and Ruth made the party to the city. Keeping a wary eye for the snake they met last time, they explored and found the Basilica containing the most interesting abandoned items. Paperwork indicates that the town was a center for the Cult of Mercury and active from roughly the time of Augustus to shortly after the reign of Constantine. Records are plentiful to the reign of Commodus (AD 192) and then sparser until the reign of Constantine (AD 313) after which the town seems to have been abandoned.

The town had seen some amount of looting and destruction with the majority of the damage being at the amphitheatre where the south end looks as though it exploded outwards, turning a quarter of the building into rubble and damaging buildings in the direction of the blast.

At the amphitheatre, the party encountered a minotaur who was wary, but curious, at their presence. The party befriended him, fed him, and promised to return. The minotaur seemed to be an inhabitant of the original town with significant amnesia. He couldn't even remember his own name, and only has hazy memories of fighting in the arena and the Mercurian priests.

As for the snake they encountered previously, they didn't run into it though the minotaur indicated that the snake only arrived 'recently' and that it stays away from him.

Experience Points

  • For exploring the town, Geoffrey, Magni, Obscurus Ignis, Joshua, Gwendolyn, Ed, Sir Hywel, Martin, Ruth receive 5 Adventure xp. Magic Lore, Area Lore: Burgundy are appropriate skills to spend this on.
