I remember the first time I saw Krosp.

Skulls were set before each of us on our workbenches. We were sternly told by the Teaching Magos that each one represented a valued deceased servant of the Adeptus Mechanicus, and that we would be giving them a new life and a new purpose. I wasn't paying too much attention. My reddened eyes showed the weeping I was still doing every night. It was "most un-Mechanicus like", said my Magos-Instructor. One should never mourn a biological death, even one's twin.....

As i worked installing the components, I studied the skull. How Dominic would have enjoyed this part of our training! "It's like a second set of hands," he would always say. "You will never need to ask me for help again." He had smiled as he said it, and quipped, "You could name it Krosp, after our old cat."

"Krosp," I whispered to the skull. "Your name is Krosp." Was it just my imagination or did the sensors in the eye sockets flicker briefly?

Dominic came to me in a dream that night, and told me he'd always be near me, to help me. And I've kept Krosp since then.
