John Remington’s Journal January 6th, 2000 I am certain now that the Green-Eyed one who took Linda away from us, and little Lily too, is a demon of disease. Plagues, pestilences, and illnesses are all associated with green. So then I checked the records and news stories in the area to look for strange phenomena and portents. What else could it be? Fairbanks had outbreaks of measles, food poisoning en masse, and a rise in HIV starting the night he arrived and we lost so much. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a demon of eating bad Mexican food:

Hebrew demons were workers of harm. They ascribed particular afflictions to particular demons: "Shabriri" (lit. "dazzling glare"), the demon of blindness, the spirit of catalepsy and the spirit of headache, the demon of epilepsy, and the spirit of nightmare, etc. etc...

These demons were supposed to enter the body and cause the disease while overwhelming or "seizing" the victim (hence "seizure"). To cure such diseases it was necessary to draw out the evil demons by certain incantations and talismanic performances (Exorcism? Linda’s charm?). Josephus, who speaks of demons as "spirits of the wicked which enter into men that are alive and kill them", but which can be driven out by a certain root, witnessed such a performance in the presence of the Emperor Vespasian.

Maybe evangelist Tom Brown’s ministries have a point (and you know me - I hate evangelists. Your sister be damned. Anyways, he writes:

“During the 1960’s, when the deliverance movement was at its peek, many Christians saw demons behind every bush. It seemed that any problem someone had was attributed to a demon—from the flu to overeating. Now, with such a de-emphasis on the devil and demons by the Church, you no longer have to look behind shrubbery for demons; you can find them parading down the streets almost unnoticed.

When was the last time you went to a Christian conference where they had a seminar speaker devoted to the teaching of deliverance? Today pastors, evangelists, and prophets teach on church growth, friendly evangelism, prosperity, and a host of other important subjects. Rarely do they mention deliverance. Don’t misunderstand me. I believe in teaching all those needed subjects, but how about devoting a portion of those seminars to the scriptural principles of setting people free. The problem with this de-emphasis of demons is not just found in ecclesiastical and denominational churches, it can be encountered in Pentecostal and Charismatic churches as well.”

He’s got a point - they do exist. Demons can be behind a sickness or illness, and you should look for signs of possession if there is reason to suspect it: other signs and omens, unnatural weather in the area, if it affects the spiritual life of the sick, discernings of spirits. Yeah, like how the aurora couldn’t be sean for a MONTH up here?! Side note: In Japan, RED is associated with expelling both demons and disease. Healing flames? SOmething that comes after disease that the demons fear? Being in the pink? Anyways, they clothed children with smallpox in red garments to ease their illness. hoso Kami- the god of smallpox!! Seeing red everywhere now, from Tori Gates to Shinto Gods to fox guardians decorated in red sashes! I see red drapes in our future!

Polynesians have their own exorcisms for disease demons, but this is more than just a demon infecting a single person. But I’m looking for a demon that can affect many diseases, not just one! It killed Lily and Linda. It brought outbreaks to Fairbanks.

This more fits the depictions of Gods rather than demons. Maybe it poses as gods over time??? Chuck says it’s possible - gods in pantheons share the power that supreme deities don’t seem to. Possibly they are just demons on a power trip. Or visa versa. If faith is going to be shattered, it might as well just all be damn true. Possible Names from la bibliotheca: Deva, Resheph, even Greek Apollo, Sumerian Asag, Croatoan (new world- see Roanoake), Nergal, Egyptian Sekhmet’s dark side is of pestilence and disease.

And as ever I am left wondering why. I can only stay to protect my sons, for Linda’s sake. She wouldn’t want me abandoning them to go on a fool’s errand chasing her killer. Especially with so little to go on. I must wait until the time is right. I must protect our boys.
