Definitions

Acheri are plague spirits. There is some confusion of whether they originate in either Native American legend or the folklore from India. In both cases, the Acheri takes the form of little frail girl, with a pale, gray complexion, that enjoys human misery.

Mythology

Acheri are plague demons, and as such they kill their victims by infecting them with diseases. According to legend, Acheri will sing and play drums and other instruments in the night and anyone who hears them will soon grow ill and die. Sometimes smoke or shadow will touch the victim.

The only reported protection against the Acheri is by wearing something red. Mothers would have their children wear red beads, rope, or have some form of red colored embroidery weaved into their clothing.

In Hindu mythology, in order for the Acheri to remove her sickness, she had to be appeased. This was done in two different ways. Beating a brass dish vigorously would place the victim into a trance of dancing frenzy, in which the individual would know what sacrifice will suffice. Another way is to make a portable alter which includes cakes and lights. It is worshipped upon, and then placed in a remote location, in the hope that the Acheri will follow, ending its’ malevolent influence.

From other Hunters:

The skinny:

Acheri are demons that aren’t capable of possession. The manifestation is more like a ghost or thought form. It’s solid enough to mess you up, but you don’t have to worry about a real person in there.

Any physical contact (any whatsoever, and they have teeth and claws) will lead to instant contagion and a quick onset of symptoms.
Acheri are usually found in rural locations, rarely in cities or suburban locations.
Acheri are shy and prefer these locations, spaces with low population density: thick forests, prairie land, wide open spaces, etc.
Acheri are some of the easiest demons to summon, so they aren’t usually where you find them because they want to be there.
Acheri are also fiercely loyal to their summoner.

Last spotted Centralia, PA: outbreaks of polio, cholera, even Ebola before the Acheri was put down.

Patient Zero is almost always a kid. Is that because the Acheri like kids, or because the kids explore areas where the Acheri likes to hang out?

Lore

The Gaddi people of the Himalayas tell of a vengeful spirit, a little girl who wandered into the mountains and died of disease. Now (they say) she lives in the tree line, just outside the firelight, laughing and calling for the children to come out and play. It’s through the children that she spreads her sickness. Entire villages have been wiped off the map by the acheri. On nights when the moon is full, they say, you can see her in the trees. It’s just a quick glimpse of a dirty girl before she vanishes in a black smoky cloud. Come on, that’s a freakin’ demon, not a ghost.

Warding and Ganking

Most acheri folklore say they are scared of the color red. Locals would wear red threads around their throats to ward them off. Sounds ridiculous, but a hunter in Banglapur claims… something. Google Translate isn’t as up to translating the odder languages. It looks like he’s saying “iron chain coated in… blood… wait, a victim’s blood? No maybe it’s your own blood? There’s a chain and there’s blood though, that much is for sure, and it’s supposed to be able to kill it. Banish? No definitely kill it. Choke it to death. Might be where the red string comes from. Hey, could be worth a shot.
