1965 Plymouth Valiant Barracuda Formula S

Cuda.jpg

The Plymouth Barracuda rolled off the line two weeks before the Ford Mustang, making it technically the first pony car. Unlike other pony cars however, the ‘Cuda became known for its handling and acceleration with a more ‘European’ feel, though it didn’t match the power or performance of later cars. Still, the fast back had style, and Linda Remington loved it. Linda kept her ‘65 ‘Cuda in top shape, driving it only during the few summer months Fairbanks had, and the car is nearly original - hey, everyone blows a gasket now and then! But the A.C. was rarely used!

The trunk of the ‘Cuda is decent but compact (in the 1 dead body OR all your gear category) and a rear divider was installed to separate the ‘normal’ trunk from the hunting gear under the fast back, though a few things have been known to slip down into the well for the spare tire... and reappear exactly when needed.

The ‘Cuda has two traits, Cool Under Fire, and an unknown trait. For Cool Under Fire, there’s just something disarming and calming about the ‘Cuda, and she exudes an air of confidence that is palpable and adds to the presence of others. While in the car or in the car’s direct vicinity, the ‘Cuda will grant this trait to the Remington brothers and their allies. This is a d4 against mental manipulation like fear and intimidation. The ‘Cuda’s got your back.

History

The 1965 Barracuda was essentially a fastback version of the Plymouth Valiant. Originally introduced in 1964, the Barracuda was targeted squarely at the youth market. The car featured a huge glass rear window the created the fastback appearance Plymouth was looking for in it's new sporty car. The interior was tastefully outfitted with chrome gauges and embossed seats and door panels. In 1965, the 225 slant-6 became the base engine in the US market, though the 170 remained the base engine in Canada. However, the 1965 Barracuda saw the introduction of a performance oriented 273c Commando engine rated at a "conservative" 235hp.

For those who opted for the 273 Commando, they also received Rallye suspension with bigger torsion bars, heavy duty shocks, and sway bars. The 273 engine had a 4-barrel carburetor, 10.5:1 compression, a more aggressive camshaft with solid tappets. These and other upgrades increased the engine's output to 235 bhp (175 kW).

The pinnacle in Barracuda's performance was the Formula S model. This combined the 273, Rallye suspension, and special 6000rpm tachometer along with badging and 14 inch (larger) blue streak tires. Disc brakes and factory-installed air conditioning became available after the start of the 1965 model year.

Motor Trend tested an 1965 model with 3.55 gears and a 4-speed at 0-60 in 8.0 seconds, and the 1/4 mile in 16.1 at 87 (MT, Jan/65). Though roughly the same as a 1995 Neon stick, these were excellent times for the day, when 0-60 in 12 seconds was considered pretty good (despite all those muscle cars, which were by no means what everyone drove).

Although the first Barracudas were heavily based on the contemporary Valiants, Plymouth wanted them perceived as distinct models. Consequently, the "Valiant" chrome script that appeared on the 1964 model's trunk lid was phased out on the 1965 model in the US market. For 1966, a Barracuda-specific stylized fish logo was introduced, though in markets such as Canada and South Africa where Valiant was a marque in its own right, the car remained badged as the Valiant Barracuda until the A-body Barracuda was discontinued. As such, Linda's 'Cuda has Plymouth, Valiant, and Barracuda markings.
